I own, and really like Peter Connolly's "The Ancient City, Life in Classical Athens and Rome" It has great pictures--photographs, reconstruction drawings, some cut-away diagrams.
Let me just give you the chapter headings for the Roman section:

The Site of Rome
The Imperial Capital
Government
Food and Water
A Day at the Races
The Theatre
The Colosseum
A New Palace
The Age of Appollodorus
The Great Baths
The City in Late Antiquity
When I was a kid, I had all the Osbourne books about time-travelling back to ancient Rome, the Vikings, Egyptians, etc. Lots of cartoons about people carrying on in various activities of life. Anybody heard of those?

Connolly's "Ancient City" is a great one along those lines for the kiddies, and equally good for adults with imagination.
There is a book, i forget the title, about Rome which shows where the ancient city's monuments and buildings were in relation to the present city. I thought it was called Roman Antiquities but could not find the title on Amazon.
Any one own the 400 dollar or so Atlas of the Roman world?
Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World (with Map-by-Map Directory on CD-ROM)
Please buy it for Christmas for me. I will give you the address.
