You've most probably had you're question answered but I'll put in my bit anyway.Admirable though the effort is computor recontructions of mosaics miss out on one vital point.Mosaics are not just pictures made up of different coloured pieces of marble,they are made up of lines of marble pieces.This is the important part of the whole concept,look at even the basic black and white figural mosaics(sorry can't post any pics up at the moment) and you'll see how the lines of tesserae denote shape and direction of movement.For example the belly of a fish would have the tesserae set slightly concave top to bottom to give the impression of the rounded shape.The equivilent in oil painting would be to have all the brush strokes shown in isolation from each other.Putting a horizontal grid across an image does not unfortunatly show this.<br>
