heck wow, thanks! Quite a catalog when they're done. I don't see any mention of how the mosaics were constructed, however, technique wise.

No there isn't much info given as to techniques, some of the commercial sites selling copies will just mention direct or indirect methods used for their pieces but not in any great detail. The best write up I've seen is in K. Dunbabin's book,Mosaics of the Greek and Roman world. She does also give the references used and has some good photos showing the setting techniques.
I was just wondering.....has anyone tried to graphically reconstruct mosaics using the computer medium? I mean I'm pretty sure it can be done if they do it with other ancient artifacts.

Reconstruct as in scan and map out the individual pieces? The marble pieces aren't standard, as I've found out quickly. Every piece seems to be different as it's cut. The exception is if you go to a floor tile store and buy 1cmx1cm squares precut in large mats. However, you have to buy a box full, or 12ftsq, at $10/sq ft, so it's costly.

Yes, reconstruct as in scan and map out the individual pieces. So I guess it's almost impossible to restore an original graphically. But now I see what you mean. Thanks

You've most probably had you're question answered but I'll put in my bit anyway.Admirable though the effort is computor recontructions of mosaics miss out on one vital point.Mosaics are not just pictures made up of different coloured pieces of marble, they are made up of lines of marble pieces. This is the important part of the whole concept, look at even the basic black and white figural mosaics(sorry can't post any pics up at the moment) and you'll see how the lines of tesserae denote shape and direction of movement. For example the belly of a fish would have the tesserae set slightly concave top to bottom to give the impression of the rounded shape. The equivilent in oil painting would be to have all the brush strokes shown in isolation from each other.Putting a horizontal grid across an image does not unfortunatly show this.
I had not noticed that bending of the tesserae at all. That is where you need good images/closeups of the originals so you can see that.

Hello all

I have been doing some experimentation with the logo for Ludus and had a go at using some ready made software to do conversions of images into mosaics and have run into the same problem Musivarius has mentioned, the PC, while doing an admirable job, still misses many of the points that give a mosaic its rougher qualities, it also tries to convert too many of the colours rather than leaving an impressionist view of work like many mosaics do.

But here is its effort against a real mosaic for comparison.
