BWAAAAAA HAHAHAHAHAHAH....
Yes, those toys are NOT historically accurate. MY GOD, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?!! Do want yet another generation believing the Romans wore armour like that? Do we want another generation hooked on fantasy? Sheeesh...
Magnus/Matt
This must be a late Roman, or a 3rd-century one. The crest, the long trousers and closed boots, the Ring fibula, the lorica plumata, a lance instead of a pilum.. and I distinctly discern a Koln spatha!
The scutum stinks, of course, but he MUST have got that one from Dura Europos, it's clearly Sassanid..
I submit this email for your approval:

Dear J
Do not, under any circumstances, allow my nephews to have Playmobil Romans. They are a travesty, and will permanently corrupt the poor children's notion of a properly dressed Roman to the detriment of all society.
Yup, Vorty, 3rd century! However, apart from his happy emotional state (he and his colleagues just killed the ruling Emperor and were handsomely rewarded by the new one?) he seems to be wearing some kind of lamellar armour...
We can be thankful that at least they think the Romans popular enough to sell toys (something members of this site have long known). Now if we could only convince them to take just a little time and expend a little effort to get the look, if not 100% accurate, then at least closer than this.

Perhaps Lego will do a better job of it.

For really well done Romans one might check out Conte Collectibles. They do first rate work, but even they have some questionable items...

For example: Did the Legions have drums? (Besides the Hollywood Romans that is.)
Oh my, too funny.

You guys should see the Playmobil Viking set, horned helmets Galore!

And when I was a kid...I even had a playmobile Indian set...Oops, sorry, Native American set. Most of the "savages" had a one-feather headband, there was a teepee, bows'n'arrows, a canoe....Ohh good times.

I bet those of us who are miniature soldier hobbyists could fabricate some more accurate items?

btw - those indian playmobile dudes didn't seem to influence my view of native americans too heavily...Even if I did use them for a Diorama project back in 3rd grade for a project on Iriquoi...

OLD...... NEW.....

I know it! The older one is the original ancient Roman, and the new one is a re-enactor! Obviously the modern one is wrong, for he is wearing a red tunic, while the older original is clearly wearing white!
