Translations of Pliny and Virgil.
#1
I'm looking for online English translations of Pliny's Natural History and Virgil's Georgics. Apart from a paltry snippet of Pliny, I haven't had much success.
Could anybody help please?
Hi

That link does eventually take you to the latin text of Pliny:
www.ukans.edu/history/ind.../home.html

Also, Bill Thayer states he has been unable to find a translation although a Japanese translation of Book nine is under way.

I have the loeb at home so if there are small passages you want let me know and I can post them

Cheers
Thanks everyone for trying!
Muzzaguchi, I appreciate your offer and thanks. But as I am interesting in looking at all the sections on herbs, flowers, trees, spices, the medicinal properties of such etc etc....I think that might prove to be a bit more than a few passages?
Looks like this is going to be a case of adding Loeb to my 'wish for but 'aint got the budget for so many books' list. Maybe I will check out the if there are any secondhand copies available on amazon.

I can't wait. That will be REALLY useful!!
Shame on you English translators!
You might want to look at this. It isn't Pliny or Virgil, but it looks like a good resource for herbal information:

ibidispress.scriptmania.com/

I also have a copy of Culpeper's Complete Herbal which, though written in the 17th Century would probably be cheap to buy and quite useful as herbal knowledge really didn't change that much from Roman times.
Yikes! I just followed that link and looked at the price of the complete book that they are offering free excerpts from. It's astronomical. No doubt very interesting, but not in a normal person's price range!
Yes wendy I think I'll give that one a miss!
As you said, I'm sure it's very interesting but...

I used to have a copy of Culpeper but I think it got misplaced during one of my moves. I originally found it in a bargain bookshop and it was very cheap.

Venicone thanks for your offer of help too. (sorry, missed that first time round.)
Anyway, I have decided to put Pliny on the top of my booklist and order a Loeb...a bit cheaper than the Dioscorides at any rate!
