Announcement - York Roman Festival
#1
York Roman Festival (1st - 7th August MMV)

Founded 2 years ago, this event, an annual extravaganza of York’s Roman history, includes 7 days (4 lead up and 3 major) worth of celebration of the cultural and military customs the Romans brought to York and the history of Britain.

There are a handful of sites that exhibit Roman remains in the city and although the archaeological remains of the military baths of Roman 'Eboracum' in St Sampson’s Square, the Multangular Tower in the Museum Gardens and Aldwark Tower near Monk Bar are modest compared with those that can be seen elsewhere in Europe, they are significant evidence of York’s historic urban heritage.

Together, with the extensive collection of roman artefacts in the Yorkshire Museum these sites serve to represent what was a major fortress and later, one of the most important Roman cities in Britain – one which for a period at the end of the 3rd century was the capital of the Roman Empire, complete with an Imperial palace.

It was in York that the famous IX Legion disappeared from, where Emperors Septimius Severus and Constantius Chlorus died and where the first Christian Emperor, Constantine The Great, was proclaimed Emperor on the 25th July 306.

York’s Roman history and heritage is fantastic, and the collections of Roman objects from the city are superb. This significant Roman history ought to better understood and appreciated and the York Roman Festival’s imaginative event will be an important contribution to that end.

If it wasn’t for the Romans there would be no York. The Festival is one way to remind people and commemorate this.

Last year the Festival entertained and educated residents and their children along with thousands of visitors to the city.

The events and activities in this year’s festival include:

· Marches around the City by military re-enactors

· Children’s creative activities and battle drills

· Spirit of the Lost Legion ghost event

· Roman talks, plays and poetry

· Living History Camps

· Romans versus Germanic Barbarians battles

· Gladiators, Wrestling and Chariot Racing

· Musicians and dancers

· Crafts people

The Festival is supported by many of the city’s tourism attractions such as York Minster, Yorkshire Museum, Museum Gardens, Treasurers House, Eboracum Roman Bathhouse, to name a few.

Everyone with an interest in Romans are welcome to come along, participate et cetera. Re-enactors especially are welcome to join in.
