Calling large heads! (helmet sizes)
#1
Hi All,

I'm looking to get a Roman helmet.  Nothing too fancy - if I could chose my perfect period it would be reign of Vespasian or his sons.  In a perfect world I'd avoid the Gallic A simply because it looks a little too boring.  (I know - wants something "not too fancy" but then thinks the Gallic A is "too boring" - already contradicting myself!)

I'm looking at the armamentaria website at the moment (having heard its reliably authentic) and looking at the <£200 price range.

Limiting factor is that I have a large head - about 24.5" in circumference meaning that I always automatically chose the largest motorbike helmet going but not so large that I can't normally find one.

Any guidance or help appreciated.

As a follow-up to my own post I've had a number of recommendations for the Deepka Gallic "A".

I've just ordered the Gallic "J" from DSC through Armamentaria. They've advised that its normally 24.5" but also comes in 25.5" so I've ordered that one. I'll let you know how it works out!

Hope it fits! As a rule, most helmets are made in India... and they are large anyway. I have a small head (obviously to accommodate my little brain), and most helmets are too large for me. Tongue

Good news - it fits!

For the record, Gallic "J" from DSC through Armamentaria. They advised that its normally 24.5" but also comes in 25.5" so I went for that one.

Temple to temple - about 18cm

Front to back - about 21.5cm

Excellent! Nothing like a helmet that fits. My first helmet was also a Gallic one, and it was larger than I wanted. I traded it for an Aquincum that was a better fit. Now I wear a Roxolani styled one, custom made for my little head by Greg Kulig in Poland. Big Grin

I have a size 8 head and the last two helmets I bought from Deepeeka, the Gallic A and the other one both fit. They were also elongated rather than round, a big plus.

I've already got my eye on another one...  Big Grin

I would avoid the Imperial Gallic 'J' as it is probably too late for your chosen period of the late AD60s and AD70s, just as the Imperial Gallic 'A', 'B', 'C', 'F' and probably 'D' are probably all two early and would all have to look fairly old and beaten up if they were to feature in an AD70s impression. Better options for the period would be Imperial Gallic 'G','H' and 'I' (the latter if you are portraying a soldier of one of the two Adiutrix legions), Imperial Italic 'C' or 'D' or Coolus 'F' or 'G'.

The Gallic J dates just before the Trajan campaign so it's not entirely out of the question. As a general rule the item was in use 1 generation before the deposit date, so roughly 25 years. AFAIK the Gallic J dates prior to AD 110.
