Looking for a legionary
#1
I am trying to track down a soldier of Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix.  The name is Caius Arilius Genialis and I suspect he is probably commemorated somehow at Carnuntum.  I suspect that there may be no stele for him and that he might be mentioned either on someone else's stele or in a centurial inscription.

The name comes to me from a list of Legio XIIII names someone else compiled some years ago and I have been asked to find out about Genialis.  I have already established that he is not commemorated in Mainz, hence my suspicion that he is probably to be found in Carnuntum.

I have the book from the Landesmuzeum Mainz, but I have nothing comparable for Carnuntum, so would appreciate any help anyone can give who may have access to good information on sculptures and inscriptions from there.

Is the name and/or legion right? I have searched EDCS and can't find a Genialis associated with Legio XIIII or a Caius Arilius Genialis anywhere.

Thanks very much for looking.  I wonder whether 'Arilius' might be a misprint of 'Aurelius'.

There's an Aurelius Genialis, duplicarius of Legio I Adiutrix, mentioned on a late Severan stone (AE 1909,146) from Brigetio. That's the only soldier by that name I can find. Perhaps Michael might have more luck?

There's also a Caius Atilius Genialis from Spain, but he doesn't seem to have been a soldier.

I thought of Atilius myself and found the Spanish one and his family.  As you say though, there is nothing there to suggest he was a soldier.  I think the Legio I Adiutrix suggestion might be a possibility, as Legio I Adiutrx and Legio XIIII were both stationed at Mainz at about the same time (although I haven't found an Arilius/Aurelius Genialis in the Leg I Adiutrix records for Mainz).  Brigetio and Carnuntum are only about 90km apart as well, so Leg XIIII GMV and Leg I Adiutrix may have had a lot to do with each other after both were moved to the Danube frontier.  Do you know if the are any Leg XIIII men commemorated in Brigetio?  If there are, that might possibly have led to a misidentification of a Leg I man as a Leg XIIII man.

Sadly the man who compiled the list of Leg XIIII soldiers' names has died now, so I am unable to ask him what his sources were.

I wonder if it might be worth checking the names 'Avilius' and 'Aelius', both of which could have been badly handwritten to look like 'Arilius' by the chap who transcribed the list.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Here are all the Geniali (or Geniales?) I can find on the EDCS inscriptions database with a legion mentioned:

CIL 07, 00119 - Caerleon. ]M[3] / [3] Genialis [3] / [3 l]eg(ionis) II Aug(ustae) ex / [signi]fero Se[2]ius / [Se]necianus / [h(eres)] f(aciendum) c(uravit) // ] / MC[3] / VI[3] / R[3] / D[3] / co[niux 3]

THere are plenty of Leg XIIII inscriptions from Brigetio though, so perhaps some crossover there. But it looks rather like your man might be a chimera!

I found this site for Legio XIII Gemina.  If you scroll down to Dalmatia, the last entry reads, ' Novae: Caius Atilius Genialis (?) Miles '.  The question mark indicates some doubt about the reading:  https://www.legioxiiihistory.org/wall-of-glory/

I then searched on EDCS and found this: CIL 03, 01907 - I(ovi) O(ptimo) M(aximo) sa[cr(um)] / C(aius) Atilius Gen[3] mil(es) leg(ionis) XIII / [Ge]m(inae) leg(ionis) I Ad(iutricis) / [3] b(eneficarius) co(n)s(ularis) / [v(otum)] s(olvit) l(ibens) m(erito).

Perhaps he's your man, although you have to allow for some confusion in the reading.

Thank you both for all the references.

Michael, I think you may have found the man.  It turns out he is known from an alter from Novae.  The inscription is as follows:

 I O M S...
...TILIVS GEN.../
..IL LEG XIII../
..M LEG I AD/
B COS
..SLM

This is reconstructed as in a paper I found as:

I(ovi) O(ptimo) M(aximo) S[ACR](vm)/
[C(aius) A]TILIVS GEN[IALIS?]/
[M]IL(es) LEG(ionis) XIII[I]/
[GE]M(inae) LEG(ionis) I AD(ivtricis)/
B(eneficiarivs) CO(n)S(vlaris)/
[V](otvm) S(olvit) L(ibens) M(erito)
