Roman Infantry Data
#1
Does any one have any good research or data on Roman Infantry, weapons, siege weapons, standards, and armour I could use to write a 'novel' with? I want to be a writer and I might as well write about what I love, Rome and her Soldiers.
Vale Raven, and welcome.
In addition to many sites on those topics, may I suggest you look at Sander's FAQ ?
Sander, one of RAT's experts, has compiled a list of the threads here, as well as suggested reading lists.
Aulus, Legio XX.

Rich, at the bottom of your thing it says:
'Aulus, Legio XX. the HIGH NOISE/low signal person for RAT. ICQ 940236'.
What does all that mean? And thanks for the site!!
I just checked out Sander's list - fantastic!
I'd like to add my two sestercii: Read the ancient sources, at least in translation, and don't just research the army. Although the Roman army was a microcosm unto itself, no army exists in isolation from it's society.

The thread was originally on the Round Table one on RAT and then moved to this one, Roman Military History/Archaeology.

There is also a Roman Army Forum run by Vardulli.
It means I talk a lot and am a rank amateur but I don't let that stop me. The Aulus is my 'legion' name, and I reenact with Matt Amt's Legio XX in Washington DC.
Richard Campbell, Legio XX.
