Going back a few pages to the superb Late Roman reconstructions by Paulus Claudius Damianus and his group, I too would like to know (Robert kept asking) about the scale shoulder armour depicted fitted to the mail shirt.

What has this been based upon? Is there written or pictorial evidence of this hybrid defense for the later period?

I recelled some post, it turned out to be one from Gioi about the lorica musculata with scales. He posted this link:
Busts of the Roman empire
Search under 'sculpture'. for about 900 busts. IIRC a bust of Valentinian (III?) who had a scale musculata with shoulder doublings?
