I have to say that although Connolly's article was well argued, I do not agree with the crouching stance he advocated. On several occasions in the past I have had little trouble in causing an opponant in such a position to become unbalanced and trip or fall over. This could be done easily with as little as a sharp kick to the man's shield or an equally sharp tap to his shield with my own shield.
