felt hats
#1
Ave!

I was wondering if anyone has any pictures of felt hats that would correspond to these:

I'll take anything! Your reconstructions or links to archaelogical sources....I'm easy. Trying to prepare for summer and would like to have some period appropriate headware.

I know that cowboy hat makers use felt blanks and I have seen those for sale, but I don't know if I can modify them to be more period in form or style.
Looking for 1st - 3rd century in design.
While I was in Tunisia I picked up a fairly comprehensive book of the many Roman mosaics that grace that country. In at least one of them, maybe more, there are fisherman wearing front visored caps, much like todays American "baseball" cap. They are probably made of straw. When I finally unpack all of my books, I will scan and post this picture.
Thanks guys, this is exactly what I was hoping for. Something easily handstitched, in a pattern that doesn't twist my fingers into knots!

I might even try this last picture as an arming cap like the article suggests...

Btw, I could not access the yahoo groups page...it kept asking me for a membership id.
It looks like yahoo won't let me set it up so anyone can acess the files, so you must be a member. I will upload the pic to my website this friday and it should help if you want a pill box hat.
I highly doubt that the Dura cap is a military arming cap for three reasons.

First, it simply seems to be the ethnic cap of the region seen in centuries of near eastern artwork.

Second, its conical shape would not allow a standard Roman helmet to be worn, with so much material bunching up in the skull. Maybe it could serve as a liner of a conical type helmet as seen worn by eastern archers.

Third, the ears are covered, and most Roman helmets go to a lot of trouble to have ear openings in their helmets, probably due to the importance of hearing commands.
I second Dan on that one.
So if it were an arming cap, it might have been one for a Persian helmet?
Valete,
