Gladius sheath reworking?
#1
Besides the standard one I usually see, is there another style/pattern to etch/drill into the brass plating?
Dave: Do you mean the Pompei type gladius sheath? Yes, and they are displayed in many websites and the usual Roman equipment reference works. Here is one.
Yes I do indeed mean the Pompei gladius. I want to de-depeekify it. Thanks for the image. It looks to be painted as well.
Valete,
That "paint" is actually tinning, an effect them thar Romans were very fond of.
Heres a few suggestions for de-deepeeka-ization of the pompey gladius: www.florentius.com/gladius.htm I actually rebuilt the wood sheath it was such crappy piece of wood, and of course it's new leather. The main thing I messed up is that I had every intention of rebuildin the chape and giving the sheath a more typical wedge shape, and totally forgot when I cut it to shape. I'll have to redo it. The work on the locket plate ane remaking the ssupension straps is pretty easy, the wood work is easy, the palmettes are easy, the most work would be in building a new chape, and the deocrative filler. I think the worst deepeeka giveaways are the chape shape, and the strange little decoration thaey put in it, and the black leather. I'd love to see pics when you're done.
I actually already saw what you did to yours on your site and wanted to do something similar. How do you disassemble the chape?
Since I knew I was rebuilding all the wood, and using all new leather, I just ripped all the brass off, pretty much toasting the original leather in the process. I was careful to keep the chape intact as I removed it. If I recall correctly I slide putty knife blade under the edge to cut as much glue a possible away. The palmettes were seperate pieces already.
I must have gotten a dried out one as I just yanked on both pieces of metal and they popped right off. I repainted the leather to a med/dark red.

Now I have to figure out what I want to make for the designs.
Yeah,
There are afew designs out there, but they mostly seem to be variations on a theme- "hey guys, I'm gonna do this one with Mars, and a shield!" You should check out the gear page on Ermine Street Guards site, I think the swords are on page 2, and not too long ago here, someone posted a real beaut, I think it was Quintillianus, he made. Also look at the swords on the Fabrica page of Leg XVI Gemina Martia Victrix in the UK ( the blue guys) Their gear guy makes beautiful stuff also. Maybe any idea in there somewhere for ya!

I guess you could resolder the chape pieces, but that round chape shape is one of the hallmarks of the deepeeka gladius, so I suggest you reshape the tip, and make a new chape.
Keep us posted, Florentius

You can see that reproductions of both real examples:
I agree with the idea of many variations of the Mars with a spear and shield, but Victoria with the palm is very frequent too. You can make a combination of some real figures and have your "customized" gladius with a great degree of reality.
