Deepeeka Montefortino
#1
At a past post i have say that deepeka's montefortino is too big. The really problem it's taht the cheekguard's position are so forward. I have fixed that, and now it's very better.
All of these I have seen so far are larger than they were supposed to be. The ideal standard for the regular sized Deepeeka helmet is 18cm wide by 22cm long. The problem is that most of their helmets start from pre-made skulls, but the conical helmets are made from scratch and nearly always are made too large. Of course, there are some people in which the standard Deepeeka helmets will not fit, so this is a good choice for them. I think we are going to try to produce a size large for many of the most popular Roman helmets.
But there will also be regular size Monterfortinos too!
My head is 23". My Deepeeka IG type C and Italo-Attic both fit perfectly, i.e. my ears stick out to the sides. I'd like for a Montefortino to fit the same way and don't want to pay for one until I'm fairly certain that it will. Are they made small enough to fit me?

I have a pretty big head (probably close to 24" circumference), and the Deepeeka Montefortino I got from La Wren's Nest swallowed my head whole like a bucket. Still, with sufficient padding it would have been acceptable, except for the (correctable, as noted above) problem with the cheek pieces.

This is only an impression, but it seems to me that 2-3 years ago, Deepeeka was making helmets to fit rather small (perhaps Indian-sized) heads, maybe 23" max, which is why your Imperial Gallic and Italo-Attic helmet fit so closely. However, they probably started getting complaints that their helmets were too small for a lot of those big, corn-fed Americans, and about a year ago started scaling them up substantially. Every recent Deepeeka helmet I've seen is actually big on me, which didn't used to be the case.
I talked with Agarwal at one Roman Days and complained about the smaller helmets, less than 24" or so, mine being a size 7 7/8 or 8. He said at the time that there was no demand for larger helmets, so I'm glad he's changed his mind.
Legio XX
All deepeeka "imperial" helmet skulls are struck from the same die. The variation only occurs in the squishing of the skulls to the oval shape. There is more variation, of course, in those helmets that do not use the standard skulls. The cheekplates of a properly fitting Roman helmets must rest close the the full face. On helmets that are too large, you can put several fingers between the top of the cheekplate and the temple area of your skull. On helmets that are too large, the cheekpieces when tied together touch at the bottom, and form a goofy-looking inverted "triangle".
But there are a lot of heads in which a deepeeka "Weisenau" type helmet won't fit, so will try to correct this.
