In fact, just over the past few days I've been experimenting with different ways of wearing the Attic helmet shown in my avatar... it's by Deepeeka and there's a fair bit o' room between the top of the helmet and the top of my head (or rather, there should be -- otherwise it just covers my eyes!). For the past year I've had a padded insert, but it was never quite satisfactory. Then I took some of the stuffing out and put it inside a Phrygian cap I've got -- much better! The helmet now rests more comfortably and is tight around the cap. Of course, as you say -- no ancient authority.
