Senators Retiring/Resigning
#1
Hello again,

Did senators have the option to resign/retire at any time? Please give evidence as well.

Thanks

Yes, Augustus introduced, that older senators can retire. The year of retirement is unclear, probably 60-65. This was part of the laws Augustus passed to regulate attendance and quorum in the senate. However, a lot of older senators prefered to not retire. Retirement here just meant, that these older senators were not obliged to attend the meetings of the senate. But they could attend and of course kept all rights of a senator.

It seems that there was no regulation at all during the republic. Older senators probably just did what they are able to do.
Ut desint vires, tamen est laudanda voluntas
