Illerup-Adal spatha blade
#1

something new: spatha blade reconstruction of the Illerup-find "WDK1 / SAFM"

the original is one of two swords with ivory / silver / gold handle from the "around 210 A.D"-horizon found there.

cross-section is flat / 6-sided at the base, then changing to 8-sided with 2 shallow fullers / side

the blade is made up from 4 9-layered twisted bars with 3 silvery layers separating them; welded-on cutting edges and an extra piece for the tang-part as it is seen on many blades from that time

steels used are welded steels with low carbon / high phosphor (all the shiny parts in the core of the blade), medium carbon (~0,5%) for the dark parts of the twisted rods and the tang-part, higher carbon (~0,7%) for the cutting edges

measures:         length: 930mm
                length blade: 747mm
width: 40 mm tapering to 26mm
                    thickness: 6,1mm tapering to 2,6mm
weight: 665g (original blade has 635g)

Looks great.

I always wondered what's the cost of such high-level blades.
