Deepeeka Shields

Many thanks for that. I am right in thinking it has never been fitted to shield? No rivet holes actually through the metal.
Having handled it, I can't now remember if there originally were holes in this piece that looked to have been filled in, or whether it never had any. From the photo, it looks as though there are four distinct raised O's where holes could be punched, but that they are all filled in. You may be right-- this piece was intended for a shield, but for whatever reason, was never mounted to one.

Interesting that the Deepeeka folks seem to have copied this feature almost exactly! Indeed, it's impressive how closely they followed the original. Think I'll have to get us one of those bosses for our one of our parmae...
Not quite as accurate, but very acceptable!

Edited by: Paulus Brittanicus at: 2/18/05 12:47 am

Here is a reconstruction illustration of the circular Guttmann shield boss above.

The "white" in the scanned picture is actually tinned, and more "silvery" in the original.
Its from the lavishly illustrated book by Marcus Junkelmann, Romische Kampf- und Turnierrustungen, and since the book examines the original in huge and scientific detail, I have good confidence in the accuracy- as far as any of us can know. Many more illustrations in the book- eg a reconstruction of the double-headed eagle helmet.
Wow, that is mighty impressive artwork. I never considered buying the book as my German is pretty limited... but after seeing this I am having a rethink. How many of the helmets in the (ex) collection are illustrated like this?

And if it is possible, I would certainly love to see an image of the double-headed eagle helmet.
My pleasure! The original
The "reconstruction" illustration

Worn over a helmet as in this Nix reconstruction

The book has many, many more illustrations- some not shown anywhere else to my knowledge,- but no other "reconstructions". Yes, it was not cheap- but a wonderful buy!

Edited by: Paulus Brittanicus at: 2/24/05 11:19 pm

Has the Deepeka Guttman boss a flanged rim or a flat one?
I'm considering to buy one for my future dished circular shield...
Thanks,
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

It has a flat rim- ie when in position on the shield it lies flush.

I've got mine on the hexagonal version of the Trajan's Column Praetorian cavalry shield (scorpion motif) and it looks great. But should I silver/ tin it like the original- and if so, how?
Here's good supplier of easy touse electroplating supplies, including a small handheld wand that would work well for the shield boss. Although technically speaking, the Romans did not have access to electroplating, it's a good way to plate without heating and melting and brushing on tin and quite possible melting your lovely shield boss into slag
The company: www.caswellplating.com/europe.html
The product: www.caswellplating.com/ki...nplate.htm
Obviously you want the tin kit, although with the appropriate wands and solutions, you can use the same power supply for other metals.
I have found the device to work very well.
