Miniature Oil Lamps?

Avete forum posters, I have another question


From a quick search on the internet, I've found several small oil lamps ranging from 4 to 5 centimeters of length. Most seem to be described as votive, but is there any knowledge on how they were used? I can't seem to find much information about them.

Frequently miniaturisation of an object that is not usually carried (because abything that is prtable can benefit from weight reduction) implies it has to fit into a constricted space.  I'm reminded of the Carrawburgh mithraeum with the special effects lighting position for the statue. Maybe such small lamps could be positioned behind statues?
