Newstead lorica rivets
#1
I understand that the rivets for the Newstead are a copper alloy similar to the Corbridge style lorica, but I havent seen any information as to whether flathead or roundhead rivets are used? Most reconstructions use the flathead rivets for all connections. Is this correct? Are any roundhead rivets used? If so, please elaborate.
In Legion VI (the only "Newstead unit" in the world to my knowledge... we have seven of them built so far, two more semi-built), we allow either roundhead or flathead rivets. Looking at the original finds (very few, BTW) shown in Bishop's Volume I of The Lorica Segmentata book, they appear flattish. On all of our Newsteads but one, we've used roundheads that we then allow to "mush" naturally during the peening process (i.e., don't use a rivet set as you peen the opposite end), and this seems to get the desired effect. One Newstead was made using flathead rivets; IMHO, those rivets have a very identifiable machined look. The heads have concentric circles stamped into them that catch the light in such a way as to really draw attention to their identicality.
My recommendation would be to use the roundheads and flatten them yourself, either during the peening process or simply with a hammer afterward. Second would be to search around for some flathead rivets devoid of modern concentric circles on face of the heads.
Below: Three newsteads-- Florentius', which has silvered fittings (are are harder to see in this photo), mine with smooshed roundheads, and Diogenes' with flatheads. Just goes to show there's not much diff past 3 feet away
Oh, come now, don't just give us a wink. Tell us about yourself and your unit! We'd love to see more mid-second century (or third century!) Newsteaders out there. Can we see some photos?
