What\'s wrong with this helmet?
#1
I am thinking about snatching one of these up for a late Roman kit. Can any of you tell me what is wrong with it and what I will need to Cut/Grind/Weld off or onto it to make it acceptable.
I would say everything is wrong. It would be less work to make a new helmet on your own...

yeah, it looks like at best you'd get the shell and some raw stock out of the cheek pieces, and I wouldnt be suprised if the shell is in four pieces. It might actually be less work to start from scratch
Actually, for a Roman helmet, the "shell" would be too shallow once the unusable neck guard had been cut down or removed and even if it was in one piece (which I expect it is - I once made an eleventh century spangenhelm from four quarters and the effort required was much greater than what it would have taken to mock one up from a spun dome with steel strapping rivitted over it for effect) you would end up with lots of problematic rivet holes once you removed the strapping, which would be hard if not impossible to disguise. You might be able to beat the cheek guards into something usable if you know what you are doing and have some good references to hand, but I think it would be both cheeper and more satisfying to start from scratch from some mild steel plate.
I would suggest that you try to procure/make a late Roman "light" ridge helmet. These helmets are extremely well documented in most any book that deals with the late (4th/5th century) Roman forces. My understanding is that Deepeka makes one that can be reworked into a decent example with a minimum amount of rework. Of course, you don't need a helmet for this period, as it appears that many troops would not have had them. If you are handy with metal and leather work, you can make your own.
OK I bought it. Why?

( Cause I'm insane)
Cause it's $38 and if doctor Frankenstein and I cant fix it we can always cut down to the bowl and start over, That alone is worth $38.but I think you guys get a little too nay sayie ( is that a word ) I think it'll work.

We are also in the midst of Frankensteining my 6 year old Trooper Helmet into something usable.

Why? , Because people say it cant be done.

NEVER doubt the power of a migwelder and bench grinders and torches and MUHAHAHAHAHAHA ....Oh, sorry, lost my head there

Basically, When it comes to this Hobby, My bud Randi is Dr Frankenstein, And I'm his assistant Igor , That's pronounced EyeGor

I bring him mangeled junk, scrap sheet metal, raw barstock and cheap unusable things like Trooper helmets and Gladius on Matt Amts Do not use list. We go down into the La-Bore-A-Tory , crank up all of the power tools and start making things arc and spark.
He creates mad Genius Ideas and I fetch things ( Yeth master, Yetthhh master) Heck I even have a Black Hood

After all of the Arcing and Sparking and Grinding is done
We end up with some pretty cool stuff!

To Date,
Over a dozen Pilum and a couple of Auxillary Spears.
1/2 a dozen Scutum, and another 1/2 dozen Clipeus with hand dished Bosses.

He did a Tuba and a Cornu by Basically Hacking up old instruments and adding in stretch tubing

4 different "Garbage" gladius' with scabbards.
Grind down the Ricasso's and the made in India Stamps.
New Wooden Furniture
New Grips
Stripped all of the Black leather off and replaced with Green, Reddish/Bronze, and Brown Leather.

So we're not exactly rookies at diggin up "dead bodies" and animating them.

We will be taking pictures of the whole process. If it works I'll post them, If not I'll post them too with a "what went wrong" report.
