Interesting Archaeology Nr Deva
#1
Underneath an early monastic (?) chapel, a roman temple has been found. The site is clearly high status (roman wise) and bricks and tiles stamped with LEG XX VV along with red painted wall plaster. It is probable (from the number and nature of the finds) that one of the few villas west of the Pennines is nearby. OK only one piece of plaster has been found in the temple so far, but the Dig is far from complete. A bit too early to build a temple to Mars on.... A very interesting site of national importance with continued occupation from the mesolithic to the dissolution of the monastries. The chapel was last attested in 1700 as a ruin. There are over 70 iron age roundhouses which seem to have been involved in the salt and preserved meats trade. Iron age British sausage factory?????
