Roman saddle & Stele of Silius

When I read your original post again, I found myself wondering if you meant the sculpture showing a stumbling horse with a four horned saddle which Peter Connolly illustrated in his original 'The Roman Army' in 1975 when dealing with saddles. I don't know where it was from but I do recall that he said it was a Gallic sculpture.

The Monument of the Julii at St Remy. It is thought to be Gallic on the usual assumption that a felled Roman horse would not be shown. Peter used the illustration elsewhere, including in his Roman Cavalryman book.
