Same principle, I think the modern froe is basically a flat bar with a bevelled edge, the Roman ones have a V cross section from what I can see.... never having used the Roman type I cant say what the difference would be, perhaps its capable of cutting/splitting thinner strips?
This one although similar to look at has a tapered blade ... but is quite expensive, maybe look for a old one of the right type?
