I don't think this is anything new in the sense that looting of Archaeological sites in war zones is a fact of life... that has now become Newsworthy largely because of who is involved.....
What is most important is that the market for these items is stopped, if there's no market and no money to be made from it its unlikely widespread looting of sites would continue....
