calcei with a last

I have just completed some calcei made on a last (two actually, one for each foot). Here's a link waxtablet.blogspot.com/ . There are pics of the shoes, the lasts, and the pattern. I'll do a tutorial for florentius.com on the next pair. It really makes me wonder if the romans used form lasts for any shoes or not. Clearly they had an iron last for pounding hobnails. I have learned that it's quite easy to include the laces in one piece with the shoe, and that cutting them on a curve wrapping around under causes no problems at all. The leather is very forgiving.<br>

Yes, Roman cobblers did use lasts. You can see one depicted on the cinerary urn of a Roman shoemaker, together with a half-moon knife, an awl, and what appears like the head of a hammer.<br>

I think the urn was found at Trier but I am not sure.<br>
