Albion\'s Tiberius + I need help
#16
Actually, as you have said you want to do an impression of a soldier of Caesar's time, if I were you I would avoid the segmentata, partly as there is absolutely no evidence for it until the last eighteen years of Augustus' reign, but also because we simply do not know what the earliest form of segmentata really looked like. All types of segmentata are not the same and the Kalkriese type exhibited features which differed from those of later types. Kalkriese type armour lacked the tie rings used to do up the girdle plates of the later Corbridge type and also featured a different style of hinge. Only a handful of plates have survived, namely the type find breast plate, one mid-collar plate and a possible piece of a girdle plate. There is also the remains of a shoulder plate which may or may not be from a Kalkriese segmentata. Other than that it is just a large number of brass fittings of a distinctive type. We do not know how the girdle plates of the Kalkriese type were done up but a huge number of Kalkriese type buckles have been found on sites dating to the first half of the first century AD, which led Mike Bishop to suggest that the Kalkriese type may have been done up with straps and buckles.
As there are so many question marks over what segmentata actually looked like during the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius and Claudius, you are on far safer ground wearing mail, which was used by all troop types.

As a final thing, can everyone please stop quoting each other's posts? It takes up a lot of space and little to the conversation. It can also confuse the thread. If there is something in particular you want to reply to and you feel you need to quote it, simply copy the relevant piece of text and paste it into your own post. Don't copy the whole thing.

Thanks Crisp for the reply. I am going to go with the Hamata, but instead of the Itallic Helm You think this is viable?

Also looking for a Scutum. Also under garment what do I need to get besides the Tunic, or is the Tunic sufficient?

Ignore the idea of a sleeved tunic. The tunics which survive do not exhibit sleeves and the papyri which list orders for clothing specify dimensions which do not appear to include sleeves either. If your tunic is as wide as most actual tunics, it will form sleeves naturally when belted.

For a helmet I think you would be better advised to get an Imperial Gallic 'A' as I think someone has already suggested, or a Coolus 'B' or 'C'

For a shield, you could either go for the long oval scutum which we know was in use during Polybius' time, or the shorter version with curving sides and straight top and bottom, as we do not know when the change from one type to the other took place. Guesses range from 106BC, when Marius decided his soldiers should stop using baggage animals and carry all their own kit, to 23BC when Augustus made his second settlement with the Roman people and established a permanent professional army funded by a 4% tax, the state committing to supply all equipment.

Thank you Crisp and everyone else is has responded. I've emailed a few vendors to get some prices because everything looks like I'm going to have to go that route. I just wanted to thank everyone for the help.

I'm sure as all this is being built I'll have more questions.

Once again I appreciate everyone's help and information.
