Late Roman Helms
#1
Salve all

I am unsure if this has been discussed recently...

I'm looking for accurate and affordable Late Roman Helmets for a good friend.

Is it the Intricisa (spelling?) helmet that is the most popular and most accurate? How are Albion's helmets?

any and all info is appreciated.
Thanks!
Titus Vulpius Dominicus ~ Your Friendly Neighborhood Roman Dude.
I got my Intercisa from Battle Orders in the UK (a Deepeeka outlet). It was £125 (though I think prices might have gone up).

The Last Legionary
This book details the lives of Late Roman legionaries garrisoned in Britain in 400AD. It covers everything from battle to rations, camp duties to clothing.

I think Deepeeka does some really nice reproductions of late Roman helmets as well, and I have always found Deepeeka's stuff to be fairly priced. I am no expert, but I would think the plain ridge helmet (Intercissa or Augst type) might have been one of the most common types. Daniel Peterson could probably help us out quite a bit on this subject. What do you think, Dan?
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, draconarius, Secunda Brittanica

I'm sure this thread is better placed in the marketplace section..

We have Deepeeka helmets (Intercisa IV and Deurne). Both of them have their weeknesses (Deepeeka for some reason fits all of their Late Roman helmets with HUGE neck plates) but these can be fixed. We like 'em.

We discussed Deepeeka and Late Roman helmets in this thread.

We discussed the so-called 'Frankhelms' in this thread.

I seem to recall another discussion about Late Roman helmets, these being infantry or cavalry, but I can't retrace it. Best start another one..
Just a small point here. Looking at Albion's web page, it appears that most of their helmets are in fact Dipeeka helmets, make in comparison between Dipeeka and Albion helmets a rather pointless exercise.
Hi Crispvs,

I was under the impression that Albion's helemets predated the Deepeeka models. Sure, they're from India (International Steelcrafts), but not from Depeeka.
First I removed both neckguard and cheek pieces, then I removed the side covers. After that, I cut the odd eyebrow under spaces, then I sewed again the cheekpieces but behind, where the eyebrows end.
After that, I re-riveted both side covers allowing the whole eyebrow ending, and covering the cheek-bowl joint.
Then I removed the inner clasp at the neck and put it outside the neckguard making a stop to the sliding strap going out the neck guard (no need to hook the clasp anywhere, just fixed by the hanging neckguard), and... voilà !

Understood? (Sorry for my lousy English )
It was very easy, but at the beginning it seemed really hard, just had to jump on the pool!
SEPTIMANI SENIORES - CATALONIAwww.septimaniseniores.uni.cc
