Amphipolis may be Roman??
#3
Hi,
@davidscotti
I don't think it is very polite to call the archologist-in-charge there, Katerina Peristeri, a "fat lady".
...or..... have you just meant to perform "ordinary trolling" there ? ;-)
@richsc
...as I've performed search on this nice little forum I came under expression that there a people
scratching with their feet in impatience (so to speak) when it comes to Amphipolis to be mentioned here.
Regarding the "infight" that has been going on in Greece itself already, we must take into account that on top of that all things which bear the "Macedonia"-Trademark are highly contested between the state of Macedonia, a former part of Yugoslavia and the state of Greece, most Greeks sharing the view that the state of Macedonia has absolutely NO right to be named that way.
IIRC the kingdom of the Macedons in the 4th century BC had a hard time being accepted as "Greek"
by the Greek "poleis" and the other states and isles of the Aegeis.
BTW Amphipolis was an Athenian foundation to guard the "Thracian interests" of Athens,
conquered by the Macedons in 358 BC.
It cost them a lot of money and a lot of military and other pressure ( not to mention a dagger or two
swung in the right direction) to get fully accepted amongst the greek Koinonia.
I think we thus can call the modern situation an "irony of history" quite easily.
The things about Amphipolis are likely to stay highly ideologized and will thus remain entertaining.
So, to "pleese the Gree(k)s":
The official website (as given by other threads on this forum):
http://www.theamphipolistomb.com/
One of the more recent press news (source : other threads on this forum):
http://greece.greekreporter.com/2014/10/...olis-tomb/
That should be the most recent news:
http://www.archaeology.org/news/2644-141...phinx-head
A lot more there, of course.
BTW: My fav would be: The (roman) battle memorial for Pydna. ;-)

Merry betting y' all

Simplex
