"..pry something open.."

The first thing I thought of was a beer, Nutella jar or Vegemite. But really, it made me think just what sort of packaging the Romans would have tha needed to be pryed open? The seal on an amphora? A box nailed shut?

Any of the above ..... There is many a way of damaging a thin edged blade. Even whittling can do it. Anyway, IF the notch is intentional, it would serve another purpose then fingergrip. When thinking about whittling,it occured to me that someone making arrows could well use such a notch to scrape the arrow round. The straight cutting edge is also a bit "off standard", but could be well used for splitting and trimming feathers for vanes.
