Walking on the walls of Rome
#1
Does anyone know if it's still possible to walk along the top of a section of the Aurelianic Walls in Rome?

I know there's a restored bit, somewhere around Porta San Sebastiano, but all the information I can find is about the museum in the gate itself, not the walkways along the walls.

Thanks - Nathan

I was last there....in October 2013 or so I think and from I recall the answer is no. The Museo delle Mura has a decentish display and you can ascend onto the topmost parts at a single point (not very large) and you can walk somewhat along the ground section but I think that's it.

I might be going again soon actually due to the whole let's celebrate Augustus thing so if things have changed I'd like to know. If I go before you do and I check I'll let you know.

On the plus side there is still some cool stuff around the area though like the tomb of the Scipio's with (copies of) the wonderful elogiae, Claudia Metella's tomb too. Generally it's not a bad area to just hang around in.

Thanks! I'm not surprised to learn that it might be closed for indefinite renovation...

But if you (or anyone else) does find the situation to be otherwise at any point, please do let me know!

You're right about the area too, of course, although whenever I've been there before I've usually been in transit between the Circus Maximus/Baths of Caracalla and the Appian Way and too busy darting across roads etc to bother with the Walls. But I'm more interested in them now, so I'll go to the Museo anyway...

Hello, Nathan and Lyceum.

From "Porta S. Sebastiano" you can walk on walls for 350 m.
official site:

From "Porta S. Paolo" you could also visit the "Pyramid of Cestius," recently restored:

Thanks Emilio. Do you know if the wall section is actually open this year?
