The dragon symbol was introduced into Britain by the Roman army, certainly by the reign of Marcus Aurelius, but likely earlier. The Romans used it as a wind-sock "draco." Claims of the dragon having a British origin have been submitted by Celtophiles, but early (pre-Roman occupation) evidence of a Celtic dragon is lacking.
