Late Roman Cavalry and Duncan-Jones
#1
Does anyone have a copy of Duncan-Jones "Structure and Scale in the Roman Economy"?
Apparently on page 117, Duncan-Jones claims that an ala numbered 160 men and another cavalry unit 80 men. What I need to determine if these figures are taken from actual primary sources or this is a deduction made by Duncan-Jones.

Your help would be greatly appreciated

Might you be thinking of Page 111?

If so the numbers are 'less than 120' and 121, and the 80 men are equites promoti. All of these estimates are derived from analyses of donatives and stipendia paid to various units, as listed on the Beatty papyri from Panopolis. So in fact they are deductions, but they are based on a primary source...

Thank you Francis, Duncan and Nathan. Although the footnote I found stated page 117, the information as given to me offline by Francis is on page 111. As I had presumed, the numbers are estimates.
