Mosaics found in Roman fort?
#1
Have there been any examples of mosaic floors found in established Roman forts? The commanders house, bath house? I've had a scan through my books and can't find any examples. Wasn't there an example from a base of Leg II Avg over here in the UK?

Certainly yes.

There are examples of mosaics from the Legionary fortress bath houses of Exeter, Caerleon and Chester. They appear to be black and white. Off hand not so sure about any forts.

Thanks, wonder why we haven't found any examples from commanders houses? Do you think it's because the bath houses tended to be big enough to be converted to use as churches?

But at the time.....they were not intended to be used as Churches....Churches did not exist. The only theory/thinking is that the area was rich in in stone/building materials so why not utilise it. Vindex has a very good theory on this item.

Yes, that was what I meant that when the forts were deserted the largest buildings left were taken over by whatever Christian authority was there. I dimly remember that thread, what was the title?
