I've added some pictures of the Open Monument weekend which was held at Fort Vechten. Fectio and Legio X Gemina took part in a very nice display.
Nice pictures Robert! I also saw them on your web site (which I frequent often! )
I think it is wonderful how you guys allow the children to interact with you, and hold and wear your equipment and such. I think it helps to educate them, and it really makes them happy, and who knows? It might also just be igniting that spark of interest in the hearts of future reenactors to come...
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica

Thanks Lucius, Luca.

Indeed Lucius, I feel I can make kids happy, and even if they don't learn but just have some fun that's OK by me. The next step for us will be to make some smaller shields and wooden swords just for this purpose.
Of course, the shields will be equipped with historically correct, pointy shield-bosses...and then we'll have to equip the kids with padded subarmali, riveted mailshirts and fully functional Berkasovo II helmets (maximum protection...), then watch them sweat...mwuhahahahahaha!

Sorry, couldn't resist the "Charibert, Evil Human Resources Manager" mode...

Anyway, there were at least two kids who were certainly "hooked" (young proto-history geeks), and I suspect that a few years down the line, some re-enactment group will be reinforced by them...

But that is a good thing, Chariovalda! I wish that I had found Roman reenacting when I was a kid, instead of "languishing" for as long as I did in the SCA!
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica

Hi Iulia,

Thanks for the nice comment - indeed I am a proud dad! Even though my daughter is only 7 and my son just weeks away from his 4th birthday, they are receiving a nice diet of history (and some garbage I'm afraid..). I hope they will want to take part when they're older.

When I think of it, I may well have become a historian because of the loads of books my father had lying around when I was a kid.. AND of course the holiday when I was 9 and we first encountered a replica of a Roman watchtower in Germany...
