Valkenburg Scabbard HELP
#1
Hello Everyone,

Does anyone have or tell me where I can get real high resolution photos of the Valkenburg scabbard. I am doing a presentation on Roman swords and would like to show this particular one along with others to discuss Roman motifs....art...etc.

Thanks

Then you'd better write to the RMO.

I take it you mean this sword scabbard (this is the only image of it I could find on the web):

I have a hi-res monochrome print of it somewhere, but it might take me a few days to find it as I am typesetting a book to a deadline at the moment. When do you need it by?

Hello Dr. Bishop and jkmol,

Thanks for the pugio scabbard. It's always good to have more photos of real gear.

However, as Dr. Bishop pointed out, I was referring to the sword scabbard. I too found that picture on the web.

However, a monochromatic photo in high res would be great!!! I think more detail is visible.

I will send a PM...Dr. Bishop

Be warned that the terminal of the pugio sheath has been restored since it was discovered, the original terminal expansion having broken off, as can clearly be seen in the photograph. I would expect it originally to have featured a normal round or globular terminal expansion, pierced by a decoratively headed rivet through its centre.
