Pompeii -The Movie
#16
"It is amusing/frustrating that the lead heroine defiatinely states (to paraphrase) "I am not a Roman, I am. Pompeian" and hates the Romans, despite bring thoroughly Roman herself...... again, its a modern sensibility of Washington versus the States, Big Evil Government versus the honest little people at the edge."

I am not so sure about this interpretation.

Let's not forget that Pompeii was besieged and conquered by Roman troops in 89-88 BCE because it had rebelled the previous year. Furthermore, in 57 CE the Romans change the status of Nucera into a colonia, thus creating huge economical problems to Pompeii (and this tension ends into a huge brawl between Nucerians and Pompeians two years later, which forces the Emperor to close the amphitheatre of Pompeii for ten years).

I do not knwo what was the aim of the screenwriter, but the enmity between Pompeiians and Romans might not be so far fetched.

Considering the awful state of historical details it would baffle me completely to find out that the screenwriter would even know such details, let alone use them as a background! :woot:

Of all the ridiculous moments this film created perhaps the most ridiculous is when the love story begins. What could be a more romantic way to win a woman's heart than by snapping the neck of a horse with your bare hands? Guys looking to hook up with women take note.

Snapping a horse's neck with his bare hands? :woot:
Wow! This guy is stronger than Conan. Stronger than Andre the Giant. Stronger than gorgonzola! I can't wait for it to come out on Blue Ray, since I love a good hi-def belly-laugh. Cool

Quote: "Kill them. Kill them All." OK I've forgotten which movie that quote is from...

I just stumbled into this. As a Starship Troopers tragic, I had to respond to the initial quote. It's used by character Johnny Rico on a number of occasions in the Starship Troopers trilogy: See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120201/quot...=qt0257077.

Actually, it's an oft-repeated exhortation by Johny. Those who might be offended by violent words and images, DO NOT click on these links. These are YouTube video grabs illustrating how the phrase became something of a slogan for the series. One from Starship Troopers 1:

True, true ... I was aware of the siege, when I was there I remember seeing one of the northern wall towers that was slighted, and not repaired (by the Roman army ... Sulla, Marius .. sorry its not my period!!). But I really think the sentiment is just cinema fodder, taking a page (or chapter) out of Gladiator, with its 'free and democratic Republic' versus the tyranny of the emperor. In fact there are lots of things 'borrowed', 'stolen' or 'imitated' from Gladiator ...
