Maniple signum based on actual hand?

As I'm reading up on sand casting, it occurs to me that casting a real hand for a signum isn't all the difficult, rather than creating a model. Since the signum is virtually sacred, could the actual hands be from Roman officials, say the commanding consul or general (Republican) or the emperor?
