Period Paint

I am looking for information on Roman period paint, more specific paint for a wood surface. The ingredients, measurements, pros/cons, etc... Also, what colors were available to them.

Milk Paint, Paul Columna in our Florida unit can tell you more.

I just use Latex, Milk Paint isn't really worth the maintenance required.

Egg yolk tempera and encaustic (wax, usually + resin) were also known. The Fayum Mummy Portraits from Roman Egypt used both and show that fairly realistic paintings and a decent variety of colors were possible.

Oil paint seems to postdate the Western Empire.

I use milk paint for all wood. I also get the base and mix pigment in it too, though I have not yet dared cinnabar. I have not had good luck with encaustic sticking to leather, though it looks wonderful.

Legio VI has a Cohort in Florida, they used to be Legion 10 but combined into us after Legio 10 died out around 2005-ish.

You still have to Travel to get to events around here though, but I think they might have events down there... I'm not sure.

May I ask what specifically you're painting?

I am doing research for an SCA project I am doing. I am entering a Latrunculi board game into an Arts & Science competition. On the borders of the board I am going to paint in the colors of the local Barony and decorate with Romans fighting Barbarians. The board will wood probably Birch.
