If it went as far south as the Black Gate (for which no evidence has been found), it would then have to climb north again with an uncalled-for re-entrant in order to line up with known stretches of curtain wall around Melbourne Street. There remains no evidence that the fort was attached to the curtain wall.
We'll have to hope the Hadrian's Wall Quest project turns up some new evidence. In the end, speculation (like resistance) is futile.
