... whereas that Caerleon chamfron (they are still working on the excavation and conservation - it takes a long time - so they are unlikely to make any premature announcements on it) could easily be residual, to judge from the similarity in the fitting you illustrated with the Vindolanda piece...

I have been discussing this with the conservation officers at the National Museum since the piece came to light (2010? or 2011, can't remember exactly now!) and although they are willing to be persuaded, it did not stop the dreaded Digging for Britain programme suggesting it was from a coif so they have already committed themselves to saying it is from "clothing" (I think it was also mentioned in the same breath as "ceremonial, of high status" etc etc) which I cannot agree with. That was from a member of the museum staff, too!

I can only tell you what the staff at Caerleon told me when I was there at the end of September and they seemed quite happy with the chamfron idea. Bear in mind the pieces are in Cardiff, and Caerleon to Cardiff is like Earth to Betelgeuse for the rest of us ;-)
