Casualty counts in late antiquity.
#16
Unfortunatly, there is no reference here as to HOW these casualties were inflicted. In a pitching hand-to-hand battle, it would seem unlikely 10 or more of the enemy were killed for every casualty on the own side. Casualty numbers have often been inflated for propaganda means, the winners writes the history. The statistics do differ from battle to battle, as the toll of a massed group of enemy advancing against an entrenched army with ranged weapons like a well protected group of archers and/or a squad of ballistae could be horrific. So it would be wise to look at more then just the figures, but also at how the battle itself played out to better understand the mechanics.

Of course.
But as Evan already mentioned "casualty counts is still a useful discussion in General".
