Roman Army Formations
#1
Hello RATer's

I'm looking for a reference regarding the deployment of a Roman Army in a longer, thinner line when facing an enemy deployed in a deep formation.

Less depth to compensate for inferior numbers? If so, one of the best examples is Pharsalos, where Caesar arrayed his front line 4 deep against Pompey's 10-deep arrangement (numbers given by Frontinus IIRC).

Yep. And Pompey was likely a little overconfident because of that--until his cavalry was routed and Caesar's cavalry attacked the infantry flank.
