Gallic A helmets
#1
Salvete Omnes,

Does anyone happen to have the dimensions of the neckguard for the Gallic 'A' helmet type? I have recently purchased a Deepeeka one, and it looks too large compared to Robinsons drawing.
Ave!
All I've got are dimensions from the brass Gallic A found at Eich. The length of bowl excluding neckguard is 21.4 cm (8-1/2"), including neckguard 30.5 cm (12"). So if my math is right, that makes the neckguard width about 9.1 cm or 3-1/2".

What is the width of the neckguard on the Deepeeka Gallic A, by the way?
Sorry Matt, forgot to let you know the dimensions of the Deepeeka Gall 'A' neckguard!

I'd say about 4 3/4".

Also there were no rivets in the side for the attachment of the cheekpieces. (They were soldered on). I had to add those AND the one on the neckguard for the tie. All I need to do now is get my colleague to make a new browguard and it'll be done!!!
I know that sounds like a lot of work, but at the end of the day, it will save me loadsa cash getting one made up in a custom armoury!
Thanks, Peronis! About what I expected--Adjustments needed but overall quite a usable piece. I definitely agree that the cost and availability make these helmets worth the problems! (Well, some of them at least!)
greetings one and all.
On the subject of helmets in general, are companies such as deepeeka the only source? my problem is that i have a large head, i dont know european or american, but in australian sizes i take a 63, so finding anything the fits is a bit difficult, i allmost brought a Gallic A off a friend but it just wouldnt fit, im not so bothered about price, but id like to find some one who makes very good quality helmets, preferably a Gallic A, does anyone know of some one like this? apologies for my distinct vagueness

thank you all

by the way i am in the UK

waiting time is also not a problem.

Deepeeka is the ONLY source for "off the shelf" helmets which are even halfway decent. Nothing else that is mass-produced is any good at all (though some companies are now doing their own clones of Deepeeka items, with extra flaws built in!).

The only alternative is a custom armorer. There are a few listed on the Legio XX Suppliers page, though I concentrate on American sources.
Best to find one who has done Roman stuff already, and look at his work up close. Even a good armorer can make bigger mistakes than Deepeeka if he is unfamiliar with Roman equipment!

Good luck, and Vale,
