Ara Maxima Herculis in Rome
#1
Hi all!
I am looking for a reconstruction drawing / attempt of the ARA MAXIMA HERCULIS (or ARA MAGNA) on the forum boarium. Did anyone ever come across one?
Thanks! C.

Wild speculation ahead:

Could it have been similar to one of the famous altars in Lavinium?

1) Both cults are very old, and date to the archaic period.
2) Both have Greek influences. Lavinium has "Greek influence in architectural design and in religious ideology," while the Great Altar of Hercules was situated in the Forum Boarium, which archaeology shows had Greek merchants and perhaps settlers in the period. In addition, the cult of Hercules was "closely connected with commerce" and this as well as its location "suggests that it was introduced by Greek traders." (Quotes are from T.J. Cornell's The Beginning of Rome)
3) Both had mythological importance to the traditions of the pre-founding of Rome. Lavinium had Aeneas, and the Forum Boarium had Evander and Hercules.
