Tom Fischer put me onto this reference, which I had missed up until now.
Examination of metal-detected finds from around Poleto, some 15km from Abrit(t)us, has suggested that the battlefield site has been located. This appears to include the latest dated military Künzing-type dagger (if the association is correct; remember, this has not been stratigraphically excavated). Other finds include chunks of helmet fittings, armour, weaponry, shield bosses, and what some people persist in calling tent pegs (actually metal tethering pegs).
Full details can be found in the publication:
Radoslavova, G., Dzanev, G., and Nikolov, N. 2011: 'The Battle at Abritus in AD 251: Written Sources, Archaeological and Numismatic Data', Archaeologia Bulgarica 15:3, 23-49
