Subarmalis?
#1
Avete!

Does anyone know where to find any recent pics of subarmalis "reconstructions"? I'm hoping to get started on my own interpretation made of leather and cloth pretty soon, and wanted to see what kind of stuff others have come up with.

thanks!
Make sure to click on the words 'front', 'back' and 'side' - they are image links but don't stand out as such...
Here's another version- it's not completely finished, but nearly. I've decided to leave the shoulder pads open, to facilitate pad removal, pad increase, or replacement. I've tacked the red wool over the edge of the sheepskin for a neater appearance. The body is a softly vegetanned 2-3 oz cow with about a 4 inch overlap in front. Finished pix to follow - florentius.com/
You have to scroll down past the loculus pics... This site is very much under construction, so please forgive the temporary dissaray... You can also view a sub. at the www.legionsix.org/. Go to the Equipment then Lorica section. Between this, Leg IX's site, and Mat Amts- www.larp.com/legioxx/, it's a pretty good cross section of what's being made out there.
Hope this helps, Quintus
By way of contrast, this is a rugby "contact suit" designed for rugby players in training so that they can receive hard hits without getting hurt (obviously, they don't play full games in them!).

Some interesting parallels as a modern sports designer (presumably with no knowledge of subarmalis) attempts to solve a similar problem?
anyone interseted in subarmali should check out the 8th's site www.roman.org.uk/reconstructions.htm
I have made a subarmalis based on the one pictured and used some sheepskin on the inside of the shoulder areas.

It works a treat. Wear on the tunic is redued, loading on the shoulders is spread and best of all you can get the shoulder plates of your segmentata to sit nice and straight (as suggested Matthew Amt).
been out of town for a bit! which sub. are you looking to duplicate. I'll be happy to send you what I've got on mine, but the post of the one in LEG 8 is quite a bit fancier. Perhaps you mean that.
Since reconstructing a subarmalis is entirely conjecture, I just thought I'd see what others have been doing. This sub is intended for hamata, and will probably have pteruges attached at waist and shoulders. I just don't know what form the rest of it will take yet.
Im making a subarmalis using period materials. Im thinking that in latter century Europe they used many layers (four to twelve layers) of linnen to make a gambeson. Several friends who play in the SCA say its a great gambeson, and swear by its' performance. So Im thinking about 6 layers of linnen all hand stitched together and tied. Im going to use it for SCA combat as well.
I also had an idea about how the pteruges were attached. Im going to attatch mine with buttons. So the leather would have slits in the top and the inside of the subarmalis would have buttons matching the slits. I think a button every 3" to hold the pteruges on with smaller buttons for the shoulder pieces.
What do you guys think? Sasha and Hibernicus I'd like to know what you think especially!
My first sub. was made of 5 layers of linen around the torso, and a shoulder doubling arrangment- all sort of linothorax based. I worked reasonably well, but the linen absorbed and held so much sweat it sometimes took more than a day to dry

Buttons? very interesting!
From a historical standpoint, I would probably suggest pointing them instead of using buttons - for one thing, I don't like having buttons driven into my flesh...
the duro book has reference to finding material under the 'persian' mail shirt which is not woven material and therefore probably felt.
<img src="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mark.martin/forum/mark.gif
