"On the Appearance of the Metal. When iron comes of the forge, when it is hammered into shape it takes on a black or forge blued patina. Our extensive hands-on experience has shown that this patina protects the steel from rust. Did the Romans polish off this protective layer? No one knows."

"Legio IX Hispana Rule for Steel Appearance
Forge blued or blackened steel is encouraged. "

What about all of the Roman paintings that show armoured figures in white and silver armour? Isn't that evidence?

You should change the paragraph to say "Our extensive modern experience"...

Paint would also protect the armour, or clear coat. Why not use that? In fact, the only real evidence we DO have is of tinned segmentata plates....which is definately not blue or black in colour. An older segmentata full of scratches would be scoured with pumice to remove the rust... I doubt it would be re-blackened from the forge. Thus in Roman paintings we see silver and white used as colours of armour, not blue, brown or black. We only see that in Hollywood, but then, we've been over this before.

Good luck with your codex.
Magnus/Matt
I use a clear coat - it's called 'oil'
