New Deepeeka Montefortino
#1
Avete, comilitones!

Well, my his is new Deepeeka Montefortino helmet just arrived from La Wren's Nest. This is the new, improved Montefortino, which I ordered (along with a couple others in my unit) to complete my Marian-Caesarian legionary impression.

My first impression is... wow, it's BIG. It fits my king-size noggin with room to spare. La Wren's was nice enough to throw in a nice, removable padded helmet liner for the $275 price tag, which helps fill the gap.

On my head, it doesn't seem to look over-large. In size, it looks somewhere between the one Dan Peterson is wearing on page 13 of "Roman Legions in Full Color Photographs" when he's portraying a Punic Wars-era hastatus or princips, which fits close to the head, and the overlarge one he (or someone else-- hard to tell) is wearing as a Marian-Caesarian legionary a page later.

The overall shape is good. The rope-like brass border around the bottom edge is a little, um, sketchy, although it's better than nothing. The crest knob looks correct, but it is held in place with a screw and it was rather wobbly when it first arrived (I've since tightened it). However, the biggest problem with this is that the "crest knob" has no hole to take a horsehair or feather plume. Presumably, if you drilled a hole, you'd run into the screw mount.

The cheek pieces are the correct shape, but the Deepeeka people seem a little confused as to how the cheek pieces are positioned-- are they flush with the sides of the helmet, or on the outside, or inside? Mine are all three, with the trailing edge starting on the inside of the helmet rim and the leading edge on the outside (the cheek pieces are flat at the top and don't follow the curve of the helmet). I suppose with a little shifting and repositioning, they could be made to look right, but it's a little disappointing that a brand-new helmet has such a flaw. Worse, on my helmet the bracket holding the right cheek piece in place looks to be cracked halfway through, and it looks like it could break with one stiff yank. Again, it can probably be fixed fairly easily, but it shouldn't be this way to begin with.

On the whole, I'd say it's acceptable and an improvement over the old Deepeeka Montefortino model, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed. I'm trying to figure out if I should send it back and ask for another one without the cracked cheek piece bracket, or just keep it and repair it.
Well, considering DPK is the only real commercial supplier of "affordable" Roman gear, and with a very large range of items, one can't immediately dismiss them. Not all of us can afford a private armorer nor do it ourselves. Albion offers very very good stuff, but at high prices. Nothing comes absolutely perfect with mass production. *shrug* But that's not what my reply is about!

(my gripe is you'd think it can't be that difficult to put a chin strap ring on the back/bottom of the neckguard...so why does DPK not do this?) but anyways!

Crispvs - Do you have pictures of your Marian era kit? I'd like to see them - an impression I'm thinking of collecting for the [far] future.

Is there a revision of Peterson's Roman Legions..Color Photographs book? should I wait or get the current edition?
Sorry Andy, but I don't have any 1st century BC kit personally, although in addition to my mid-1st century AD kit I can also do a reasonable impression of an early fourth century soldier. I think you were probably thinking of my frater nomini T. Flavius Crispus.

M.Vib.M - for once I agree with you. I've been advising deaf ears to stay away from Dipeeka for years.
Ave, Andy!

I'll have photos of some of us in early Republican-era gear up soon. These are from a History Channel production we filmed a couple of weeks back, the "Real Story of Hannibal." When contacted by the producers, they initially wanted us to use our 2nd-century AD kit to portray 3rd century BC legionaries. We nixed this and went on a crash program of procuring and manufacturing appropriate Republican gear (mail shirts, pectoral plates, Montefortino helmets, etc.). We also built a bunch of long Republican oval scuta (with the central spine, even!).

As a result of appearing in this show, several of us thought, "hey-- this is so fantastic, let's form a Republican adjunct to Legio VI!" And so we did. It's part of our project to portray Legio VI legionaries in all eras from ca. 500 BC through the end of Roman Britain, ca. AD 410.

I don't yet have a photo of me in Marian-Caesarian gear yet, but I'll post one as soon as I get it.

As to the merits and problems with Deepeeka gear, see my related separate post in this section.
Ave, Andy! I would definitely buy the current (and only) edition... it's quite well-done, and is an invaluble reference for Roman reenactors, especially of the 1st Cent. AD. And when you're making things like vexillum, marching packs, etc., it's really great to see what the other guys have done. But be forewarned, our collective knowlege of Roman equipment has improved since then: you won't find any examples of subarmalis in Volume I, and the "2nd century AD" guy needs a LOT of work (something our unit will be rectifying in Dan's next book). While there is no "revised" edition, Volume II is currently under production and should be out sometime in '05.

As for Deepeeka: to put it simply, there'd be no Roman reenacting if this company, with technical input from Dan Peterson, had not made the wide variety of equipment it offers available. Could some individual items be made better? Most probably (my biggest gripe is the gargantuan proportions of some of the helmets). But be made better and still be affordable by the vast majority of reenactors? Absolutely not. I have a friend who owns a custom-made Imperial Gallic H, paid about $2,000 for it. While it's nice, it's simply not that much better than the $275 Deepeeka helmet of the same type to justify the exhorbant price mark-up. Deepeeka's just fine for most of us... and finding little ways to make it more accurate (like addind a ring or fitting to the back of some of the helmets, or ditching the black leather on the sword scabbards) is half the fun!
I'm not sure if it was here at RAT or in a personal email but I believe that Peterson stated that the new DPKA Montefortino is closer to the original or that the first examples out of DPKA were smaller than they should be.....
