Carrhae 2017
#16
Encyclopaedia Iranica suggests 6th May, translated from 9th June 701 of the Roman calendar http://www.iranicaonline.org/articles/ca...n-may-53-b. The date of the event is not fixed, so we might move to June depending on availability of a location and participants.

As for riders:
Getting enough riders for the battle is currently proving difficult, although the standard would not be too high. Riders would be expected to canter at an infantry line (but engage in trot / walk!) with a lance; most archery would be done stationary or at a walk due to arena and safety constraints. Depending on numbers there might be some horse-on-horse with Gallic vs Parthian cavalry, but this will depend on numbers.

We're more than happy to have Iranian infantry along - for the battle, roles would include the baggage train / ground crew (as camels aren't really feasible) and manning the drums there. We hope to do a separate skill-at-arms show which will include some infantry action as well.

The living history camp will also be an extremely important part of the event.

Palmyran Archer and Dan - you'd be very welcome to do infantry roles and living history, if you like (or cavalry, if you can ride Palmyran Archer). We are very short on Parthians at the mo!

And they may even want to come and play!!

I will have a new pony by then, and look forward to having a venue when we can get up a bit of speed (you'll need at least a football pitch size...you need braking room too :winkSmile

Well, I know where is front and back of horses ... and yes I used it for riding ... but it's a long time ago and little different to ride on horseback by using your bow ... so give me a small horse (no pony) I will try to make it. By the way, this is2013, there is some time to train,

What about getting these people into the organisation?
Then try to work out some workshop with them about horse riding/archery with a discount for everyone attending the Carrhae event?

Well, happy to give it a go if the event organisers are happy for me to do so.

It may mean that the event insurance premium goes up a bit though!

Thank you Nadeem. If I can get there I will, horseless or not.

Should we maybe have a thread about Parthian clothes and arms?

Possibly, although I think Iranologists are perhaps one of the smallest minorities here! I can direct you to most of the sources though. Basic clothing is the Iranian crossover coat + loose leggings (wool coat, cotton leggings); leather two-piece soft soled shoes. The coat is decorated with rows of circles at the edges, sleeve ends, mid-bicep, and a line connecting the collar to the mid-bicep running along the shoulder. Weaponry - one or two daggers with a four-lobed scabbard; archery set; sword if you like - at the very minimum

Are you on Facebook? There are quite a lot of Iranology research groups there.

Afraid not. I tried launching a page for XMFM there but I'm, frankly, too dumb and impatient to figure out how to use Facebook effectively.

Only reason I suggest a new thread is that I like to look at making a good kit in lots of detail, and wouldn't want to clog up this thread with too much of that.
